IP phone setup for offices in Dubai — what to plan for

IP phones are cheaper and more flexible than traditional lines — but only if the network underneath them is set up right.

IP phones send calls over your internet connection instead of a dedicated phone line — cheaper to run, easier to add new extensions to, and usable from anywhere with the right app. The catch is that call quality now depends on your network being set up correctly, not just the phones themselves.

Before buying hardware

  • Confirm your internet connection has enough consistent bandwidth for the number of simultaneous calls you actually expect
  • Plan network segmentation — voice traffic on its own VLAN performs far more reliably than sharing a flat network with everything else
  • Check that your router/firewall supports Quality of Service (QoS) so voice traffic gets priority over a large file download

Common causes of bad call quality

  • No QoS configured, so voice competes with regular internet traffic
  • Wi-Fi-only phones on a congested wireless network instead of a wired connection
  • A firewall silently blocking the SIP/RTP ports the phones need
